4 More Reasons Why You Need a Coach - Especially If You Think You Don’t
"Every way of a man is right in his own eyes."
What do Warren Buffett, Donald Trump, Barack Obama, Gordon Brown, and Lance Armstrong have in common? They all have coaches in one form or another. Some call them partners, some call them advisers, but they all have them. If you’re not convinced that you need a coach after reading the first 4 reasons, I have 4 more for you.
It’s easy to get carried away in your day-to-day life, and lose track of the big picture. Sometimes this can have disastrous effect. If you’re playing pool, pushing the ball one millimeter too much to one side can have a huge difference in where it ultimately ends up.
The same is true in life - it takes just a few steps in the wrong direction, and you can completely miss your goals. What often happens in this case is that we don’t get back on track, instead we say: "Yeah, well - that’s not what I really wanted anyway." Instead of achieving our goals, we settle for the wrong path - it’s easier than admitting you were wrong.
A coach doesn’t have this problem - like I said earlier, she’s not emotionally involved in what you do. Your coach can keep an outsider’s view on the big picture. She can keep an eye on where you’re going. And when you’ve gone astray, she can show you that you’re on the wrong path, and get you back on track.
A good coach will keep you focused on your goals. She will not let you slack off. She will not accept your excuses. She will not let you settle for something that is not good enough. At the end of the day, she will keep you accountable. It’s easy to bullshit yourself, but your coach will see through it.
Sometimes we need a push in the right direction; sometimes we need a good kick in the ass to get moving. It’s never easy to push yourself - you always know how to refute your own arguments. That’s not a problem for a coach, though - she can push you and be happy doing that.
Finally, your coach can challenge you when that is appropriate. It’s not motivating to do something you’ve done a hundred times before - we all need a challenge that gives us a chance to grow. I’ve heard it said many times that people don’t rise to the challenge - they stress out, panic, and freeze. That’s true - if the challenge is too big.
And if the challenge is too small, well - then it’s not really a challenge, is it? That’s why you need a coach. You need someone who can watch you grow, and provide you with just the right challenge at just the right time.
