4 Reasons Why You Need a Coach - Especially If You Think You Don’t
Every business development book I’ve ever read tell at one point or another the same thing: you need to get a coach, a mentor, an adviser - or adult supervision, if you’ve got entrepreneurial ADHD. The first thought that comes to my mind when someone says "you need to get a coach" is: "This is easy - I don’t need anyone kicking my ass, I can do this myself."
And it’s true - we are strong-willed, we can control ourselves, we can focus, and do what we need to do, and follow through on our plans. Except that most of the time - we’re not, we can’t, and we don’t. We all need our own kind of a coach - and if I didn’t have my form of adult supervision, pushing and pulling me in the right direction, I’d be out there looking for one. Here’s why:
A coach can save you a whole lot of time and embarrassment. She knows the stuff much better than you do, she’s been there before - by listening to her and following her path you can save yourself a lot of trial and error. Ultimately it will be up to you to get the job done, but a good and experienced coach can hive you one heck of a head start.
The most important thing that a coach can give you is an outside view on things. King Solomon knew this 3 thousand years ago: "Every way of a man is right in his own eyes." (Proverbs 21:2) Whatever you do, you will be greatly involved emotionally, and if you do something wrong it will be difficult to admit it - even to yourself. Your coach will not be as emotionally involved, and can give you a push when you need one.
Another important job a coach has is to help you discover your own strengths and weaknesses. We like to think that we’re all very smart, and organized, and skilled, when in fact we’re not. Because a coach has an outsider’s view, she’s in a much better position to recognize these things.
Once you do learn what your strengths and weaknesses are, your coach can be a big help in improving your strengths, and helping you avoid situations that require your weaknesses. Most people believe that it is important to work on your weaknesses and get rid of them. It’s much more effective to work on your strengths, and avoid weaknesses.
