The Easy Way To Double Your Sales

Selling online is a game of numbers. You’re selling a $50 product, and your sales page converts at 5%. You get 5000 people every month to read your sales page. That means that you’re earning $12,500 per month. What can you do to double that?

You can’t raise the price to $100 - well, you can, but it won’t work. You can work on your pitch and improve the conversion rate - but raising it from 5% to 10% will take a lot of time, and a lot of effort, and is not guaranteed.

The obvious move would be to double your traffic. If anyone of you has a formula for getting 5000 more visitors to a sales page, I’d really like to hear that. There is an easier way to double your sales, though.

What is the first thing you hear, when you order a hamburger at McDonald’s? "Do you want fries with that?" McDonald’s learned a long time ago - the easiest way to increase your income is to sell to the person who’s just bought from you.

When someone buys from you, she gives you her trust. By thinking in terms of sales made many marketers waste that trust. Once they’ve made their one sale, they don’t want to hear from that customer again. Bad move.

Successful marketers, on the other hand, know that a customer’s trust gives them permission to sell them again. It has to be something relevant. It has to be something the customer would want.

Selling ice-cream to the guy who’s just bought medicine to cure a sore throat? Wouldn’t work. But offering waxing to someone who’s hired you to wash her car? Sure.

In the marketing world this is known as up-selling. You might also come across the term "back-end product" - it’s essentially the same thing: a product you sell to people who are already your customers.

1/3 of the people who bought something from you would be willing to buy again if offered a complementary product. It doesn’t stop there - you can sell, and sell, and sell. So what happens if you have your $50 product, plus a stream of $50 up-sells?

Of the 5000 visitors, 250 buy the first one - that’s $12,500. Of those, 83 buy in the first round of up-selling, 28 buy the second time around, 9 in the third, 3 in the fourth, and 1 buys the last up-sell. That’s a total of 124 additional sales - $6,200. Now if you increase conversions to just 6%, and get just 600 additional visitors - you’ve doubled your sales.
